The $25,000 California Contractor Bond

Required for every active CSLB license — and cheaper than most contractors think.

Every active California contractor license requires a $25,000 contractor license bond on file with the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) — the amount rose from $15,000 in January 2023 under SB 607. Without a current bond, the CSLB will not issue, reactivate, or renew an active license, and a lapsed bond suspends your license automatically.

The good news: you don't pay $25,000. A license bond is a guarantee, not a deposit — you pay an annual premium for a surety company to stand behind you.

What the bond actually does

The bond protects consumers and employees, not you: homeowners damaged by defective work or license-law violations, and workers owed wages, can claim against it. If the surety pays a claim, you must repay the surety — which is why keeping claims at zero matters for your future pricing.

Some contractors need more than the base bond:

  • Bond of Qualifying Individual ($25,000): when the qualifier (RMO/RME) doesn't own at least 10% of the business
  • Disciplinary bond: after a CSLB disciplinary action, in higher amounts
  • LLC employee/worker bond ($100,000): required on top of the license bond for licenses held by an LLC

What it costs in 2026

Premiums are credit-underwritten. Typical annual pricing for the $25,000 bond:

  • Good credit: roughly $100–$250/year
  • Average credit: roughly $250–$500/year
  • Challenged credit or past claims: higher, but markets exist — this is where a broker earns their keep

Multi-year terms usually discount the annual price. The bond must be written by a surety admitted in California on the Attorney General-approved form, and the CSLB must receive it within 90 days of its effective date — your broker files it.

Don't stop at the bond

The bond satisfies the CSLB; it does not protect your business. A contractor hit with a jobsite injury or property-damage claim needs general liability — and if you have employees (or hold one of the classifications California now requires regardless), workers' comp. Many GCs and commercial clients also demand certificates of insurance before you can bid. We package bond + GL + workers' comp for Westside contractors in one quote.

How much does the $25,000 California contractor bond cost per year?

Most contractors with decent credit pay roughly $100–$250/year; average credit runs $250–$500. Credit, license history, and classification drive the price — you never post the $25,000 itself.

Is the contractor bond the same as insurance?

No. The bond protects consumers and employees, and you must repay the surety for any claim it pays. General liability insurance is what protects YOUR business from third-party injury and property-damage claims.

What happens if my bond lapses?

The CSLB suspends your license automatically until a new bond is filed. Contracting with a suspended license is illegal and can forfeit your right to be paid — calendar your renewal or let your broker track it.

Do I need workers' comp if I have no employees?

Certain classifications (concrete C-8, HVAC C-20, asbestos C-22, tree D-49, roofing C-39) must carry workers' comp even with zero employees — and California law extends that requirement to essentially all licensed contractors by January 1, 2028. Plan for it now.

How fast can I get bonded?

Usually same-day: the application is short, pricing is instant for most credit profiles, and filing to the CSLB is electronic.
